“Full Day School Is a Key to Build Indonesian Student’s Character”

First of all, let’s pray and thanks to our God, Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa who has been giving us some mercies and blessings so we could attend and gather in this place in good condition and happy situation by pangastungkara panganjali umat “Om Swastyastu”

Secondly, I don’t forget to say thank you so much to the committee who has giving me chance to speak in this Speech Contest.

The respectable ones are the judges.  The Honorable all of the participants and all of the audience. In this great occasion I would like to bring a speech with title “Full Day School Is a Key to Build Indonesian Student’s Character“

Ladies and Gentlemen

“Education is the most powerful weapon that we can use to change the world.” This expression is really has deep meaning about what is the benefit from education. Therefore education is a key for the nations which want to be a great nation. If their generations are fools, it means the nation hasn’t a big opportunity to be great nations. This is the reason why our government in this case is Educational and Cultural Ministry has big spirit to make the Indonesian young person get their rights that is education. From the free school fee for the students at elementary school until junior high school, and now there will be a new program which is called full day school. Full day school is a program made by the Minister of Education and Culture, Muhadjir Efendy to give more chance for the students to learn and get their lesson. This program means that the students have to spend their time to study and to build their characters by joining the non formal education that is extracurricular. In general, full day school is a school program that held the teaching and learning process full of the day. Start from morning at 6.Am until 4.Pm in the afternoon.

Full day school was begun around 1980 at USA and was held at kindergarten, and then it was improved to the next level that is elementary school until senior high school. The education of full day school is not the new things in Indonesia. This program is already held at Pondok Pesantren. In that place their students study Moslem for full of the day. Muhadjir Efendy also said that full day school doesn’t means that the students have to only study at school full of the day but the student will get the education of character building through the activities of extracurricular. And now there are around 500 schools at Jakarta which are being the sample of the full day school program. Those schools are come from the three level of formal education in Indonesia. The first one is Primary Level for the elementary school. The second one is Secondary Level for the junior high school and the last one is Tertiary Level for senior high school and vocational high school. As I have stated previously, full day school is made to build the student’s character. It is really related to our president program, Ir.H.Joko Widodo that is “ Revolusi Mental “ or “ Revolution of Mentality”. So with full day school student who have been study for middle of the day they will not directly come back to their house but they will get the character education. For the elementary school the characters building will be given to the students around 70%. While, junior high school is 60% and 30% for senior high school or vocational high school. Many criminalities in Indonesia were done by the young people. It means they have less good characters, eventhough they are not have one. So, the effort to decrease the bad characters of Indonesian young person is only by giving them the education of character building. And one of them is by full day school. There are many good impacts if this program is already available in each school in Indonesia.For example is full day school will decrease the negative influenced of globalizations such us free sex, alcoholic, drugs, and so on.Because they are created to be characterize people.

            Full day school is the best solution to face the globalization. And the question is, how could the governments make this program be the best solution to face the globalization? It is not only being the government’s home work. We as the part of the society also have to support the governments program to make our young generations to be a characterize people. There are many clever person, but to make our young generations to be a characterize people is not the easy job for the government. The student’s parents have to support their child to get the education by giving the facilitation. And the most important action is to keep controlling the education process of our child. Therefore the society and the governments have to work together to make Indonesian young generation be the good generation by education. Hopefully, the education of full day school could make Indonesian young generation has good behavior and also being the good generations by completing the facilities for the school to apply the full day school program. As the wise man said “The end of knowledge is wisdom, the end of education is characters”
